We have a number of clients who take live feeds from their Building Management System (BMS) into Riskenomics.
There may several reasons why the business chooses to do this, and I thought I would share with you some of those reasons and the advantages live feeds can bring.
Instant data to inform decisions
Whilst the BMS itself will alert the engineering team of any systems failures, the engineers may not instantly be aware of all the knock-on impacts of that failure. By linking the BMS live feed into the dependency modelling, those impacts will be immediately apparent, giving the team the data they need to take corrective and preventative action far more quickly.
To manage energy efficiency
The systems linked into the BMS – such as heating, ventilation, chillers, air-conditioning, alarms, lifts, CCTV, lighting, power control – will use the lion’s share of the power within the building. Some estimates have put these systems’ usage as high as 70%.
Understanding the inter-dependencies within the organisation in conjunction with energy usage can provide very useful data to form a deeper understanding of energy usage patterns in order to reduce it, and also manage availability for peak periods.
DCIM-style functionality
The purpose of DCIM (data centre infrastructure management) is to bring together all aspects of IT and datacenter facility management – hardware and software – with a view to creating real time monitoring and management reporting across the datacenter, and ideally across the entire enterprise.
The BMS will form part of this picture and by putting feeds from it and other systems into Riskenomics, the organisation will be able to benefit from the same type of monitoring and management information that a DCIM can bring, but at a fraction of the infrastructure investment.
Best of breed
Using the dependency models as a central “hub” for monitoring and management means that disparate systems can be combined and the data analysed in a consistent manner. This gives organisations the freedom to select systems based on their performance and suitability to the business, rather than because of their compatibility with other systems.
